State-by State Requirements

Each state has its own laws on minimum car insurance requirements. These requirements are listed as a series of three numbers divided by slashes. For example, the State of California has a minimum requirement of 15/30/5. The first number refers to the maximum amount, in thousands, that each injured person will receive in case of an accident. The second number refers to the total amount, in thousands, that will be awarded for injuries, and the last number refers to the total amount of coverage, in thousands, that will be awarded for property damage. In California, the minimum requirements are $15,000 per person, $30,000 for total injuries, and $5,000 for property damage.  The following are more examples of minimum requirements by state:

It’s important to remember, that meeting the bare minimum of your state’s requirements may not be enough for quality protection. These values may not cover all of the costs of a car accident.
