Prep Your Home for Winter

Cold winter months can create some nasty problems for your home. There are many ways to help avoid serious damages that could leave you out in the cold.

The following steps will help to keep you warm and toasty this winter:

* Cut back overgrown trees and dead branches that could collapse from the weight of snow and ice, potentially damaging your property.

* Properly insulate rooms such as the basement and attic. Consider dual-pane windows, as well, which keep cold air out and warm air in during winter.

* Fix any damage to your water pipes. Minor leaks can quickly become major, so correct the problem immediately.

* Service your furnace, chimney and water heater at least once a year.

* Make sure the outside out your home is propertly repaired. Clean gutters. Fix cracked steps or walkways that could pose hazards.

* Flying south for the winter? Before you leave, have a plumber check your pipes and drain any excess water. Ask a friend to stop by once in a while to check on your home. Make sure doors and windows are secured. Activate your burglar alarm if you have one.

The standard homeowners insurance policy covers most winter-related risks. However, it does not cover flood damage. You may need to consider a separate flood insurance policy.
