Healthy New Year's Resolutions

Many Americans resolve to improve their lifestyle as the calendar flips to the new year. Do you make New Year's resolutions? If so, do you stick to them?

Most resolutions are health-related. Below are some popular, healthy New Year's resolutions. Good luck sticking to your goals.

* Losing weight: Probably the most obvious resolution. If you want to drop a couple dress or pant sizes this year, here's some advice: Don't set unrealistic goals. Even with a strict regime of diet and exercise, most people will not lose more than a few pounds per month (you'll lose more initially, but as the months go by weight loss will be more challenging).

If you are not an exercise junkie, you should start your weight loss/exercise program slowly. Begin with 20-minute evening walks. Maybe add some light weight-lifting to your routine. It also helps to have a partner. Weight loss programs are very difficult to maintain by yourself. You and your partner can push each other and you will enjoy the process much more when you are with a friend, spouse, etc.

* Eating healthier: Even if you are within a reasonable weight, many people simply eat too much unhealthy food. Another common resolution is to stop eating junk. Find healthy and tasty alternatives to high-sugar, high-carb snacks. Make a commitment to avoid late-night snacking (nothing after 8:00 p.m.). Avoid sodas, as well.

Not all New Year's resolutions are related to weight loss. There are several other resolutions that will help to improve your mind, spirit and goodwill toward others:

* Spend more time with friends: Have you lost touch with some of your friends. Make it a point to communicate more and to spend time with your friends.

* Volunteer your time to a worthy cause: Philanthropy is very rewarding. Are there specific causes that are near and dear to your heart? If you are athletic, maybe you can work with the Special Olympics. Maybe you can volunteer at your local food pantry or Boys and Girls Club. Maybe you can volunteer your time to an orangization representing your business industry. There are many excellent programs that offer opportunities to give back to your community and to those in need.

* Stop procrastinating: Are there a bunch of home repairs that you've been putting off for weeks or months? You will feel much better and you will get a sense of accomplishment when you follow through more on your tasks.

* Learn a new skill: Want to learn how to play an instrument? Been interested in learning website design? Almost everyone has that secret desire they've put off for years. Go for it! Learning a new skill is very satisfying, and it makes your life more interesting.

* Be a more attentive spouse/parent: Been spending too much time in the office? Do your spouse or children complain they don't spend enough quality time with you? Re-committing yourself to your family obligations should be a top priority.
